Gillian Clarke on winning the Hay Festival Poetry Medal
I had no reason to imagine this was going to happen so I didn’t understand at all where Peter was leading with his speech. It was totally unexpected and I’m shocked and charmed.
It is an absolutely fantastic award to win. I am very pleased with it. I am particularly delighted with the fact that the medal has an owl on it, representing the mythological character Blodeuwedd about whom I wrote a poem in my collection Letter from a Far Country. The way Peter did the whole thing was very theatrical, albeit quietly so. He produced the rabbit out of his hat, or the owl out of his pocket.
