The lights dim. The excited babble of conversation dies away. A thousand schoolchildren have somehow made their way into the Tata tent and are about to be transported to Everest!

I love talking at Hay. It’s such a great festival for young readers and you can sense the buzz in the air as they go from event to event.

Where else can you climb to the Summit of Mt Everest and listen to a Costa award winning author all in the space of one morning?!

It’s a bit of mind warping experience for me to be here. Last week I was in Nepal, gasping for air at Everest base camp so the mellow green hills of Hay are a bit of a shock. The air is super thick down here, it feels like soup!

The schools programme is getting stronger every year. I hope I will continue to be a part of it and to share my love of adventure with a new generation of explorers! Climb safe and keep a look out for rampaging yetis.
