‘I’m with the band’ – Zillah Bowes

‘I’m with the band’ – Zillah Bowes

On the day I arrived at Hereford, excited to be on my way to Hay Festival, I shared a lift with a small group of people I decided were definitely a band. They were loading their stuff into the boot of a shiny Hay car,  so I squeezed in next to their luggage at the back, assuming that their instruments were hidden under the rest of the bags.

There was a cool looking guy with a beard, a funky Goth-looking girl (both of these had amazing tattoos), a smart bloke sitting in the front who I thought might be the lead singer and a pretty, folksy looking girl with fine long hair.
A few country lanes later, and after introducing myself with my first name, one of them mentioned the Writers at Work programme, the amazing new scheme for Welsh writers at Hay supported by the Arts Council of Wales.
That’s what I’m here to do too, I said to myself. Hey, are you guys writers? I asked. And they were. Funky, cool, tattooed, smart and witty writers, and my new friends.
