PLANNING FOR A BETTER BRITAIN – KATE HENDERSON

Who says town planning is boring? More than 200 people joined us this morning for a lively debate at Hay Festival about our book, Rebuilding Britain. It was great to hear questions from an audience inspired by the Utopian origins of the planning movement. But there were also very serious questions about how, in the face of climate change and growing inequality, we are going to plan for the future. Andy Fryers challenged us at the end of the session about what we’d like to see in the Queen’s Speech today. I answered seriously about a new ‘Homes for All’ Bill, whereas my colleague Hugh Ellis called for a ‘Love a Planner’ Bill. To my surprise, Hugh’s suggested Bill won the audience’s vote.
