Remembering Wangari Maathai
The Green Belt Movement in Kenya was founded by Professor Wangari Maathai (above) to help conserve the environment by empowering rural African women and their families to take action and create sustainable livelihoods for themselves. Wangari died last year. The inaugural lecture in her memory was presented by Chinese writer and historian Jung Chang, who was then interviewed by John Kampfner. Wangari’s daughter Wanjira attended the event and says:
‘Thank you for bringing Hay to Kenya. Loved it! The sky’s the limit.
Congratulations on the excellent choice for the Wangari Maathai lecture– we look forward to doing more with you in the future.’ touch!’
