The Skidelsky Duo

The Skidelsky Duo

Is happiness something we want to maximise? A question not often asked. Probably because the answer seems simple. This question formed the basis of the talk by the father -son Skidelsky duo who put forward their own economic theories, drawing on the hypotheses of Keynes and the current state of capitalism. Their ideas attracted murmurs of agreement from the audience, who no doubt found it as refreshing as I did to hear arguments against continuous growth and extreme consumption, commenting on the powerful force of envy in economics. Having gone into the talk daunted by the prospect of heavy economic theory, I emerged willing to search for ‘the good life’ where there is less of an incentive and need to work. Sounds good to me.
